Stefan G. Bucher is a man possessed by actualizing ideas. He is a writer, graphic designer, and illustrator as well as the man behind the Pasadena based design studio, 344 Design. Born in 1973 in Germany, he moved to Southern California to attend Art Center in Pasadena and graduated in 1996 as an advertising major. Upon graduation, he was recruited to work as an art director at Wieden & Kennedy in Portland. Shortly after the agency, with everyone moving to the digital age and downloading their music on iTunes, Bucher took on design beyond CD covers by making books and art catalogs. He has designed CD covers for just about every major record company and has done work for Sting and Whitney Houston. As an active member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Stefan G. Bucher has served as the vice-president of membership of the Los Angeles Chapter from 1999 to 2001 and as vice-president of event programming from 2001 to 2003.
Bucher is also the creator of the popular online animation series Daily Monster. For 100 days he filmed himself drawing a new monster every night, based on random ink blots. Visitors then posted stories about each monster on the blog. The clips have been downloaded over a million times and are collected, along with selected stories, in the book 100 Days of Monsters with a foreword by Ze Frank. The series has been included in the prestigious Communication Arts Illustration and American Illustration annuals, and was the subject of the annual Fresh Dialogue event held by the New York chapter of AIGA in May 2007. Variations of the Daily Monster clips appear on the relaunched TV show “The Electric Company.”
Bucher is coming down from Pasadena to speak to the students at The Art Institute of California – Orange County. Get ready for insights about his creative process and expect perfect kerning, tales about monsters, and as he puts it himself, “All that AND I’m taller than you think!” Don’t miss out as Stefan G. Bucher shares his knowledge about life, love, and graphic design on February 16th, 2011 at 5pm.
